Sanitary Stainless Steel Tubing: A270, 3-A, Finish and RFQ Buyer Guide

Sanitary stainless steel tubing is the precision pipe used where product purity matters: dairy, brewing, food and beverage processing, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Unlike general industrial pipe, it is judged by internal surface finish, clean welds and traceability rather than just pressure schedule. This guide explains the standards, grades, polish levels and connection styles buyers should specify on a hygienic RFQ.

What makes a tube “sanitary”?

A sanitary (hygienic) tube is a welded or seamless austenitic stainless tube made to a cleanability standard. Its inner wall must be smooth, free of crevices, pits and weld seams that trap product or bacteria, so it can be flushed, CIP-cleaned (cleaned in place) and repeatedly sanitized. It is sized by outside diameter (OD) rather than nominal pipe size, and ends are usually prepared for clamped ferrules or orbital welding.

Standards to specify

  • ASTM A270 / A270M — the common American specification for seamless and welded austenitic stainless sanitary tubing, covering TP304L and TP316L.
  • 3-A standard — the widely recognized U.S. sanitary equipment standard for dairy and food applications, governing surface finish and construction.
  • DIN EN 11850 — the European hygienic tube dimension series, often used alongside A270 for EU-style systems.
  • ASME BPE — the bioprocessing equipment standard, used for higher-cleanliness pharmaceutical and biotechnology systems with defined electropolish surface classes.

Grade: 304L vs 316L

  • 304L (TP304L) — low-carbon general food grade for water, mild products, brewing and clean ambient lines. The “L” keeps welds from sensitizing.
  • 316L (TP316L) — adds molybdenum for better chloride and acid resistance; specify it for dairy, salty brines, CIP chemicals, pharmaceuticals and any line that handles aggressive or acidic products.

For the general difference between 304 and 316 in corrosive service, see our 304 vs 316 grade selection guide; sanitary systems almost always take the low-carbon L variant.

Internal surface finish (Ra) and electropolishing

Finish is measured by roughness average (Ra) in micrometers. Common hygienic inner finishes run around Ra 0.4–0.8 µm (about 15–32 µin), with finer electropolished surfaces for biopharma. A rough inner wall holds residue; a properly polished, electropolished wall rinses clean and resists bacterial adhesion. Require a stated Ra value on the certificate rather than accepting “polished” as a vague description.

Connection style

  • Clamp ferrule ends (tri-clamp style) — the tube end is rolled or welded to a ferrule, sealed with a gasket and joined by a hygienic clamp. Fast to assemble, inspect and disassemble for cleaning.
  • Orbital weld ends — plain ends welded by an automated orbital welder for a fully continuous, crevice-free line common in pharma.

General wall thickness and pressure considerations for stainless pipe are covered in our Schedule 10S / 40S / 80S wall thickness guide; sanitary tubing has its own thinner, dimension series and should not be mixed with pressure pipe schedules.

Buyer’s sanitary tubing RFQ checklist

Send these details so the supplier matches the hygienic standard:

  • Application: dairy, brewery, food, beverage, pharmaceutical or cosmetics; product type and CIP chemicals used.
  • Grade: TP304L or TP316L.
  • Standard: ASTM A270, 3-A, DIN EN 11850 or ASME BPE.
  • Outside diameter and wall thickness, and preferred length (commonly 6 m, or cut to size).
  • Required internal Ra finish and whether electropolishing is needed.
  • End preparation: clamp ferrule, plain weld end or cut-to-length.
  • Mill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1) with chemistry and finish report — verify it using our 钢厂检验证书买方核对清单.

应避免的常见错误

  • Buying ordinary decorative or pressure pipe for a food contact line that needs an A270 / 3-A cleanable finish.
  • Ordering 304L where brine, acid or CIP cleaner calls for 316L.
  • Accepting “polished” without a written Ra value or finish report.
  • Mixing sanitary OD dimensions with nominal pipe size schedules and getting the wrong ferrule fit.

Send us your product, CIP method, required standard and dimensions, and SOROYA will quote the matching 304L or 316L sanitary tubing with the correct finish and documentation.
