Stainless steel checkered plate (also called diamond plate, tread plate or anti-slip plate) is a stainless sheet with raised diamond or lenticular patterns pressed into one side. It combines the corrosion resistance of stainless with the slip resistance needed for floors, steps and platforms. This guide explains what it is, the common patterns, grades and what to specify on your RFQ.

What is checkered plate used for?

The raised pattern creates a non-slip walking surface in wet, oily or coastal conditions. Typical applications include:

Platforms, walkways and stairs in food, chemical and marine industries.
Kitchen floors, brewing and dairy equipment where cleaning is frequent.
Vehicle trailers, truck bodies and anti-slip covers.
Decorative wall cladding and architectural trim.

Common patterns

Diamond (five-bar / chequered): the classic raised diamond pattern, the most widely used.
Teardrop / lenticular: elongated oval embossment, common in Asian and European markets.
Three-bar / five-bar: parallel raised ribs used for heavy-duty industrial flooring.

Grades and thickness

304 / 304L： general-purpose, indoor and dry/mild environments.
316 / 316L： molybdenum-bearing, for coastal, marine, chemical and food-processing floors exposed to salt or cleaning chemicals.
Typical thickness: 1.5 mm to 6 mm (16 ga to 1/4″); thicker gauges for heavy-traffic platforms.
Standard size: 1219 × 2438 mm (4 × 8 ft), 1219 × 3048 mm (4 × 10 ft), or custom cut to size.

Checkered vs flat plate: what to remember

The raised pattern adds to the base thickness. When calculating weight or load capacity, specify whether the quoted thickness is the base thickness (under the embossment) or the overall thickness (including the pattern). This avoids disputes on arrival.
