Most industrial pipeline elbows are wrought and forged or formed from solid pipe, while the CF8 / CF8M grades buyers sometimes see are cast grades used mainly for valve bodies and certain large fittings. Confusing the two leads to the wrong microstructure, weldability and corrosion performance. This guide explains cast vs wrought elbows, the grade codes, and what to specify on a B2B RFQ.

Wrought buttweld elbows: ASTM A403 and ASME B16.9

The standard pipe elbow that is welded into a process line is a wrought fitting made from austenitic stainless pipe stock. In North American practice it is covered by:

ASTM A403 / A403M — wrought stainless steel buttwelding pipe fittings, with grades such as WP304 / WP304L and WP316 / WP316L.

ASME B16.9 — the dimensional standard that sets outside diameter, center-to-end radius, wall thickness and end preparation for fabricated steel buttwelding fittings.

Wrought elbows have a worked, dense grain structure from forming, which gives them consistent strength and sound weldability to A312 pipe. Radius selection (long radius vs short radius) is covered in our LR 与 SR 弯头指南, and connection style in the buttweld vs threaded guide.

How wrought elbows are formed

Standard seamless elbows are made from pipe cut to length, then pushed or induction-bent over a mandrel into a curved section and heat-treated to restore the austenitic structure. Larger or thinner-wall versions may be made from a welded shell. The forming direction preserves wall continuity; the finished elbow should show no casting porosity or sand texture.

Cast elbows: CF8 and CF8M under ASTM A351

Cast grades are poured molten into a mold rather than worked. Under ASTM A351, the common austenitic casting grades are:

CF8 — the casting equivalent of roughly 304, a chromium-nickel austenitic stainless without molybdenum.

CF8M — the casting equivalent of roughly 316, with about 2.0–3.0% molybdenum for chloride pitting and crevice corrosion resistance.

CF8/CF8M are most commonly specified for valve bodies, pumps, housings and some flanges under casting standards such as ASTM A351 / A743. Cast metal can contain microscopic porosity and has a different (less worked) microstructure than wrought, so it is generally not the grade named on a standard ASME B16.9 buttweld elbow.

Why the grade code matters on a certificate

Buyers should match the fitting grade to the pipe and to the service. A WP316L wrought elbow welded to A312 TP316L pipe keeps a consistent low-carbon, corrosion-matched joint. Mixing a cast CF8M body with wrought pipe elsewhere in the system is normal for valves, but a plain pipeline bend should come as a wrought A403 fitting. Always check the mill test certificate rather than relying on the commercial label; our MTC buyer checklist lists the chemistry and marking to verify.

Cast vs wrought at a glance

Point

Wrought elbow (A403 / B16.9)

Cast (A351 CF8 / CF8M)

Process

Formed from solid pipe, worked grain

Molten poured into mold

Typical use

Pipeline buttweld bends

Valve bodies, pumps, housings

304 equivalent

WP304 / WP304L

CF8

316 equivalent

WP316 / WP316L

CF8M (with Mo)

Microstructure

Dense, worked, weldable

May contain micro-porosity

RFQ checklist for stainless elbows

Manufacturing type: wrought A403 buttweld (standard pipeline) or cast A351 (valve-type body).

Grade: WP304L / WP316L, or CF8 / CF8M where a casting is genuinely required.

Dimensional standard ASME B16.9; radius LR (1.5D) or SR (1.0D); angle 45°, 90° or 180° return.

Size (NPS) and Schedule wall thickness matching the pipe.

End bevel, finish, and required mill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1).

Common mistakes

Assuming CF8M on an elbow quote means the same as WP316L wrought; the standard and microstructure differ.

Ordering a cast body for a simple pipeline bend where a wrought A403 fitting is the correct, weldable choice.

Ignoring the MTC chemistry, especially molybdenum content, in chloride or coastal service.

Mismatching Schedule wall between elbow and pipe.

Send us your NPS, Schedule, radius, angle and required grade, and SOROYA will quote the correct wrought or cast stainless elbow with the matching certificate.

SOROYA PTE.
