Buying duplex 2205 stainless steel plate starts with a practical question: what must the finished component do, and what evidence must arrive with the steel? A quotation that says only “2205 plate” leaves room for different grade designations, dimensional assumptions, inspection scopes and fabrication costs. Those differences can turn an attractive material price into a difficult project.

This guide helps purchasing teams prepare a clearer enquiry for duplex stainless steel plate. Use it alongside the project engineer’s approved material specification, particularly when a plate will become a pressure component, welded tank section or part exposed to corrosive process conditions.

When Should Buyers Consider Duplex 2205 Plate?

Duplex stainless steels combine ferritic and austenitic phases. Compared with common austenitic grades such as 316L, 2205 offers higher strength and can provide improved resistance to certain forms of chloride-related corrosion. These properties make it a candidate where the design needs more than a basic stainless steel grade. That comparison is a starting point, not an automatic substitution rule. Ask the project engineer to approve the grade against the actual fluid, temperature, cleaning chemicals and operating conditions. Avoid specifying a material merely because a previous project used it. A change in service conditions can change the selection, even when the equipment looks similar.

Put the Exact Grade and Product Specification in the RFQ

Do not rely on the commercial description alone. Ask the quotation to repeat the precise grade designation and governing plate product specification from the approved drawing or material requisition. If the project calls for UNS S32205, write that designation explicitly rather than allowing “2205 or equivalent” to become the only acceptance criterion.

Where a supplier proposes a different designation or dual certification, request documentary confirmation and engineering acceptance before ordering. Record the required standard edition where your project controls it. This gives the supplier a defined compliance target and gives receiving inspectors a clear basis for checking the delivered plate.

Keep the material purchase specification separate from the finished equipment design requirements. A certificate for plate does not, by itself, establish that a fabricated vessel or structural assembly meets its applicable design code.

Define the Plate Dimensions Before Comparing Prices

List thickness, width, length and quantity as separate fields, with units shown consistently. State whether the dimensions describe a full stock plate, a rough blank or a finished component. Include the drawing revision for shaped pieces and identify any machining allowance that must remain after cutting.

Ask bidders to confirm the tolerances included in their offer. Flatness and edge condition can matter as much as nominal size when the next operation is fit-up, machining or welding. If a dimension has a special acceptance limit, put that limit in the enquiry instead of expecting a stock plate quotation to include it automatically.

Clarify how the order will be billed: actual mass, theoretical mass or price per piece. For cut blanks, ask whether the charge includes nesting loss and whether usable remnants belong to the buyer. These simple commercial details make competing offers easier to compare.

Discuss Fabrication Before Committing to Supply

Higher material strength can affect workshop planning, so involve the fabricator early. Share whether the plate will be bent, drilled, machined or welded, and ask the fabricator to confirm that the proposed material and dimensions suit its equipment and qualified procedures. Do not promise a thickness reduction solely because duplex has higher strength; any revised thickness requires design approval.

Welding also deserves specific attention. Duplex weld properties depend on the resulting microstructure, and the thermal cycle influences phase balance. Purchasing teams should request compliance with the project’s approved welding requirements rather than insert a universal heat-input or interpass-temperature value into every order.

If the supply scope includes edge preparation, identify the bevel geometry, root face and inspection responsibility. If it covers only raw plate, make that boundary explicit so the fabricator can budget the remaining work.

Agree on Certificates, Traceability and Inspection

Specify the required inspection document and the information that must accompany each shipment. Ask how the heat identification on the plate will correspond to its certificate, packing list and any cut-piece marking. When multiple heats are supplied, the documentation should allow the receiving team to distinguish them without guesswork.

Additional testing should follow project requirements. If ultrasonic examination, positive material identification, corrosion testing or microstructural checks are required, state the method, sampling scope, acceptance criteria and reporting requirements. A vague request for “full testing” can produce incompatible quotations and disagreement over what was included.

Also identify any hold points before dispatch. A third-party inspection booked after the material has been packed may affect both the schedule and cost. Set the document review and release sequence when placing the order.

Compare Delivered Cost and a Realistic Dispatch Plan

Build a comparison around the same purchase scope: accepted grade, dimensions, certificates, processing, inspection, packing and delivery term. Request the named delivery location, quotation validity and payment terms. Keep confirmed stock availability separate from estimated mill or processing lead time.

For an overseas shipment, ask how plates will be supported, separated and secured. Identify who will handle unloading and confirm any bundle-weight limits at the destination. Request a packing list that links package identification to the ordered items. These details help the buyer plan receiving work before the shipment arrives.
